Disclaimer: These recommendations are meant for use while camping, primarily for chopping wood and twigs to prepare a roaring fire for hotdogs and smores. Everyone likes smores. If you don’t, maybe you should be on a watch-list somewhere.

Now that we have the feds off our backs, let’s get this show on the road. Below you’ll find a handful of camping hatchets and axes that scored high with the members of the outdoors community.

2. Aclima8 Combar Multi-Tool

Blade length: 2.25″
Overall length: 15.75″
Weight: 2.4lb
Materials: Titanium, stainless steel, aircraft-grade aluminum, and glass-reinforced Nylon. Choosing to do this thing in alphabetical order means that we have to start with something a bit different.

After a successful Indiegogo campaign, we were rewarded with a proper camping multitasker. This tool is an axe, a spade, and a hammer. It also includes a little storage compartment for all the other small bits you may need or with the items from the Combar Pro kit. The kit includes a survival knife and a folding saw and will add roughly another pound to the overall weight.

Now, both the ace and the spade need a bit effort to set up, but that’s good news. Well, unless you want everything to slide and shift while you’re using the tool. Make sure to check out the tutorial on the website and follow it to a T, so you don’t end up a digit or two shorter. The axe blade does have a cover, still better safe than bloody.

Once you set the tool you want to use, a locking mechanism engages to keep everything in place. There’s also a sophisticated locking mechanism that prevents the magazine from slipping out of the handle.

This is a military-grade tool and it’s developed according to US Military standards.

2. Barebones Hatchet

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 16″
Weight: 3lb 12oz
Materials: Carbon steel blade, beechwood handle, polyester sheath. Now for something very pretty – a truly remarkable designer field hatchet that looks like it should be on the cover of GQ. Wearing a suit.

The blackened carbon steel looks quite elegant mounted on a beechwood handle. The final touch comes in the form of the blade sheath. It’s made out of polyester, yet it proved itself to be as useful as it is attractive.

At the back, the head of this hatchet also features a flat hammer. Users found this model very suitable for kindling and cutting smaller branches, as well as setting up hammocks and shelters.

Both the handle and the head can be reset without any special tools. The handle just needs to be reinserted back into the place, while the head can be beaten into submission.

3. BuckNBear Pack Hatchet

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 10″
Weight: 1lb
Materials: D2 steel blade, maple burlwood handle, leather sheath. BnB set out to create a very strong and durable item in a fairly small format. Even though this hatchet’s quite compact, users fount it capable of handling a lot of different jobs when out and about.

The blackened head has a very enduring blade and a tactical hammer at the back. But the handle is what makes this model stand out. It offers multiple grip options for hacking, scraping, or cutting while staying firmly in the grasp of your hand.

And those green swirls that make it look like a magic item from a video game don’t hurt either.

4. Council Tool Premium Hudson Bay Camp Axe

Blade length: 5″
Overall length: 24″
Weight: 2lb
Materials: 5160-grade alloy steel blade, hickory handle, leather sheath. A classic that can’t be beaten. This is what you gift to the Woodcutter to thank him for saving you from the Big Bad Wolf.

The wood for the handle is selected based on the grain orientation for maximum strength. Then, it’s cut and shaped into a slight curve that ensures a stable grip. This shape will also allow the handle to flex a bit.

Council Tools offers a lifetime guarantee on the head, Though a portion of the manufacturing process is done by robots, every item is hand-finished by skilled artisans. Their proprietary designs and manufacturing techniques result in a tool that can withstand a lot of abuse.

5. Council Tool Hudson Bay Camp Axe

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 16″
Weight: 2lb
Materials: 5160 steel blade, hickory handle, leather mask.
A slightly more portable offering from Council Tools. While the previous one may be better suited for a log cabin or an RV, this one is slightly easier to bring on a camping or a hiking trip.

We are talking about the same quality of materials and manufacturing here as in its larger sibling. The head is slightly more curved to allow for multiple cutting and chopping techniques you might need to employ during an outing. Also, a tactical hammer is added to the back.

The handle is still curved to provide a stable grip and has a hint of flex.

This model comes with a leather blade mask instead of a full-sized sheath, but the latter is available and sold separately.

6. Combat Ready EDA Folding Axe

Blade length: 2.5″
Overall length: 8″ closed length
Weight: 10oz
Materials: AUS-8 stainless steel blade, G10 scale handle.
As a switchblade style tool, this model is ideal for emergency kits, minimalist campers, and bug out bags. Though it’s not made to completely replace full-sized models, it can be useful when the going gets tough.

There are two independent opening methods that you can pick either based on your preference or the circumstances. First, more traditional, sliding the blade out with your thumb, or by rotating the cockscomb style spine that is visible when the axe is folded.

Just watch where you put your fingers – if this guy closes on them, you can tell them bye-bye.

7. Columbia River Kangee T-Hawk

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 13.75″
Weight: 1.5lb
Materials: SK-5 steel blade, glass-reinforced nylon handle, Bolton sheath. This little beast is designed by Ryan Johnson of RMJ Tactical in Chattanooga, TN. This guy has been making Tomahawks for the past 30 years and has a large fan base among special forces troops. Of course, this means that his stuff comes with a military0grade quality rating.

This model is small enough to fit into the majority of camping kits, but still hefty enough to tackle different kinds of jobs. The ergonomic handle can be seized in multiple ways that allow for different cutting styles.

The T-hawk is made from a single slab of high carbon steel. The blade is covered with a powder coat and crafted to withstand overly zealous chopping on one side and fine shaving on the other side of the spectrum.

8. CRKT Black Powder Hatchet

Blade length: 3.6″
Overall length: 13.2″
Weight: 1lb 11oz
Materials: 1055 carbon steel blade, polypropylene with glass-reinforced nylon handle. Another heavy-duty offering designed by Ryan Johnson, but this time in a more familiar format. The model is a result of a partnership with Ruger, a company slightly more famous for items that tend to be a bit louder than hatchets and axes.

This time, the handle is simple and straight. It features texture at the base for a better grip and a lanyard for additional retention.

The head is hot forged, with a blade that is capable of handling anything from rough chopping to more precise shaving. It’s also covered with magnesium phosphate black coating to prevent (this) corrosion. It also features a blunt hammer on the other side.

This model doesn’t come with a cover or a sheath, but something like the Birler here can do the trick.

9. Cold Steel Trail Boss Axe

Blade length: 4.5″
Overall length: 23″
Weight: 2.6lb
Materials: 1055 carbon steel blade, hickory wood handle.
Jumping back to the classic configuration here. This is quite a lightweight model but, as the manufacturer says, “tough enough for chores that would make a hatchet or a tomahawk scream for mercy”. Anyone who decides to test this claim and makes a recording of it happening, please send it in.

Supposedly, Lynn C. Thompson of Cold Steel Inc took it to a month-long hunting trip in the outback of Australia and put this axe to the test. He challenged it with various tasks, including chopping down a Gidgee Tree (one of the hardest woods found down under). I guess the experiment was more than successful since this is one of the biggest bragging points of the manufacturer.

Another plus, the edge can be sharpened and maintained at home, though it would not be recommended to do it without a good axe and machete sharpener.

You can also pick up a 24″ and a 28″ handle. Don’t know why you would need a larger one for your camping kit, but I ain’t your mother, so there.

10. Estwing Black Eagle Tomahawk Axe with Leather Grip

Blade length: 2.3″
Overall length: 16.25″
Weight: 24oz
Materials: steel blade and handle, leather grip, nylon sheath. Do you remember those scenes from cartoons when the (insert a name od a trademark character here) would tray to swing an axe, only for the head to separate from the handle and fall on their head? Did you ever have a feeling that will happen to you at some point?

Well, fear not, for this tomahawk is forget as a one-piece and it will take a lot of force and/or bad luck for cartoon shenanigans to occur. The handle is finished with a leather grip for easier handling. If you’re not cool with leather, other options are available as well (see the next entry).

The blade is designed to meet the needs of campers, sportsmen, and military professionals. It’s suitable for cutting, chopping, clearing, etc. On the other side, you’ll find a pointed tip for breaching.

Estwing makes its products and sources its materials in the US.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

11. Estwing Black Eagle Tomahawk Axe

Blade length: 2.3″
Overall length: 16.25″
Weight: 24oz
Materials: Steel blade and handle, nylon vinyl grip, nylon sheath. We are talking more of the same as the previous entry, just a bit more Batman’s tool belt ready.

Together with the black on black look, we have a nylon grip instead of the leather one, making it more vegan friendly.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

12. Estwing Fireside Friend Splitting Tool

Blade length: 2.4″
Overall length: 14.25″
Weight: 2lb
Materials: Steel blade and handle, leather grip, nylon sheath. This may not be the most versatile entry on this list, but it’s a solid option for those who need a solid axe for chopping firewood. It’s a good choice for those without ideal woodcutting skills since its handle is designed with a good weight and length ration, giving leverage and power for easy chopping.

The edge is hand sharpened, while on the other side is a flat mallet. Its surface area is large enough even for the chunkiest of tent pegs.

The neck and the head have a matte non-reflective black coating, while the grip is made out of genuine leather.

It comes with a perfectly fitted nylon sheath. However, if you don’t like it, you’re on your own. Estwing doesn’t offer anything but nylon in their lineup, and some other “universal;” what’s and covers won’t fit the head.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

13. Estwing Sportsman’s Axe

Blade length: 2.75″ or 3.25″
Overall length: 12.5″ or 13.5″
Weight: 1lb
Materials: Steel blade and handle, leather grip, nylon sheath. This is a perfect universal tool that is suitable for several jobs during a camping trip. It’s equally effective in slicing and clearing, as it is in chopping eager chunks of wood.

It is also made as one-piece with a leather grip for easier handling. The handle is curved so you can adjust your grip based on the task you’re performing.

A definite advantage of this model is the size option. That one inch might not sound like a lot at first, but once you have it in your hands you’ll understand. If you have smaller hands, having that tiny size difference means that you can have a better grip on the axe, and therefore use it safely.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

14.Estwing Camper’s Axe with Shock Reduction Grip

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 18.75″
Weight: 1lb
Materials: Steel blade and handle, nylon grip, nylon sheath.
Estwing has upgraded its regular line with some lovely shock reduction technology. Each item from this line can be easily recognized by the bright blue handle – although, if you’re quick enough, you might still be able to get your hands on the limited edition all-black version of this model.

The patented shock reduction grips are proven to reduce impact vibration by up to 70%. They are covered with textured nylon to prevent any slipping, white the whole handle is curved for easy handling, no matter the task.

This model is also forged as a one-piece, and made in the US from the US-sourced materials.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

15. Elk Ridge Personalized Axe

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 10.5″
Weight: 1.1lb
Materials: Steel blade and body, pakkawood handle, nylon sheath. This particular axe is crocheted with wool yarn, so you will have to watch out when you throw it into the wa… Wait, that doesn’t sound right…

Okay, so this item is very popular with DIYers and small businesses that offer engraving services since it’s very affordable and easy to customize. There’s quite a few of them online that are willing to engrave your name, logo, or message, so when you throw the axe no one can misunderstand what you’re trying to say. And this is technically a throwing axe, so there.

The one-piece design also serves as a multi-tool – the three holes allow it to play a part of a wrench if needed, and there is also a bottle and a can opener in the back.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

16. Fiskars X11 Splitting Axe

Blade length: 3.4″
Overall length: 17″, 20″ with sheath
Weight: 2.2lb
Materials: Steel blade, FiberComp handle, FIberComp sheath. If you’re writing to Santa and asking for a campaign axe, ask him for one from Fiskars. It would be easy for him to pick one up since the company also lives in Finland.

The major selling point of Siskars axes is the trademarked FiberComp material which is lighter yet equally or even more durable than some traditional material used for making handles. The company claims that it is stronger than steel and that it helps in providing even weight distribution for perfect power-to-weight ratio during use. It also has shock-absorbing attributes.

The X series also includes the proprietary grinding technique that provides a sharper edge and a low-friction blade coating that prevents the axe head from getting stuck. The PermaHead design is over-molded so the blade can’t be separated from the handle without some serious determination.

The manufacturer claims that these axes are virtually impossible to break, and they offer a lifetime warranty.

The X11 is best suited for splitting and chopping wood, yet it could tackle other tasks if needed.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

17. Fiskars X7 Hatchet

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 16.5″ with sheath
Weight: 1.4lb
Materials: Steel blade, FiberComp handle, FiberComp sheath. This is pretty much the same model as the X11 but just a bit smaller. It also suffers from all the advantages that come from the FiberComp handle and the PermaHead design.

With the sheath attached, it doesn’t even clear 17 inches, making it very compact and great for hiking or emergency kits and bug out bags.

However, it does have that much less chopping power than its bigger sibling, so if you are considering one of these two models, re-examine your needs first.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

18. Fiskars Splitting & Super Splitting Axe

Blade length: 3.5″
Overall length: 28″ and 36″
Weight: 3.6lb and 5.7lb
Materials: Steel blade, FiberComp handle, FiberComp sheath. Though they might have a bit different look, these two axes have the same attributes as the previous two entries. Although, there are two major differences.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but they are a touch bigger. I know, shocker. But with that size also comes the ability to handle tougher jobs and larger pieces of wood. Their design is compared to baseball bats, especially with their ability to multiply the power and speed due to the balance.

They might not be the lightest and most portable thing to throw into your camping backpack, but they will do well for an RV, cabin, or general post-zombie apocalypse defense needs.

19. FirstEdge HRS Survival Hatchet

Blade length: 3.2″
Overall length: 12.75″
Weight: 1lb 15oz
Materials: Elmax steel blade and handle, G10 grip, Kydex sheath. FirstEdge makes some stellar survival knives, and this hatchet doesn’t fall too far behind. It’s a pretty light and decently sized model that can perform a variety of tasks. Of course, the chopping powers are on par with many larger models. It’s quite hefty for its size and feels quite solid in the hand.

The one-piece design is complimented with an ergonomic grip. The blackened surface prevents friction, and the head also includes a hammer on the other end.

The included sheath is designed to hook up on your belt, and it can be set for both right-handed and left-handed use.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

20. Gränsfors Wildlife Hatchet

Blade length: 3.4″
Overall length: 13.5″
Weight: 1.3lb
Materials: Forged steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather sheath. Sometimes, for a good axe or a hatchet, you need to trust the descendants of people who used to launch them into other people’s faces for fun. And for general pillaging purposes.

Gränsfors is a Swedish company that specializes in making axes – they cover models that range from ones that are supposed to fit into your camping kit, to historical reproductions if you suddenly decide to go Viking.

This model is a slightly larger version of the Hand Hatchet. The head is identical, but the handle is longer. This gives it a lot more power and versatility and makes it capable of cutting anything from branches to small logs.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

21. Gränsfors Small Forest Axe

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 19″
Weight: 2lb
Materials: Forged steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather sheath. Some more chopping action from our friends from Sweden.

The forest axe is designed to deal with all the wood chopping needs you may have in a forest. I know, it took a while to figure that one out.

It has a larger head than the previous entry and it’s just a tad bit less versatile. However, the longer handle gives a lot more chopping power, so this axe is capable of dealing with a lot more than small logs. It will not fall a 100-year old oak, but it will make small trees very afraid.

All that being said, it is still small and light enough to fit into a backpack and it should not prove to be too much of a burden when hiking. Or viking.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

22. Gränsfors Small Hatchet

Blade length: 3.4″
Overall length: 10″
Weight: 11oz
Materials: Forged steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather sheath. Remember that Wildlife hatchet? Yeah, it was the larger version of this one.

Pretty much everything about the materials and manufacturing applies here as well, but there’s just a small difference in performance. Oh, you will still be able to split thins apart, just like with a full-sized axe, but it will be just a bit more about il mano instead of il machina.

Or treat it as a priest – let it hear your confessions or use it to hit fish over the head.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

23. Gerber 23.5″ Freescape Axe

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 23.6″
Weight: 54oz
Materials: Forged steel head, FiberComp handle, and sheath. This axe ain’t no baby food. But where did I see it before?

Oh right. This axe is almost identical to the Fiskars model, just green. With the sameFiberComp material for the handle and the sheath. And differently shaped and attached head. And a more affordable price.

Yes, when compared to the Fiskars axes it will fall a bit short, but don’t let that fool you. This is still a good product – well made, high-performing, and durable. So, if Finland was a bit out of your budget, then go to Oregon.

Note: the old version used to have a black and grey handle, and it seems that some customers are calling for it to come back. Keep an eye on the company’s response if the green is not your color.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

24. Gerber Gator Combo Axe

Blade length: 2.7″
Overall length: 8.75″
Weight: 1lb 7oz
Materials: Forged steel head, Fibercomp handle
Now for something a bit different. This tiny axe is meant for an avid hiker or backpacker that needs to pack light but might end up in a decent amount of blade-wielding shenanigans. It features the standard Gerber quality of manufacturing and materials, but in a tiny, tiny format.

This model is an upgrade to the discontinued one that went by the same name. The new improvement is in the long handle that allows for more power when chopping. The bottom of it is textured for a more stable, non-slip grip.

the handle also houses a coarse blade handsaw which is made from the same materials and features a grippy handle as well.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

25. Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Hatchet

Blade length: 3.5″
Overall length: 9.4″
Weight: 21oz
Materials: Forged steel blade and handle, rubberized grip, nylon sheath. Someone should have told Leanardo DiCaprio about this one.

Okay, it might not do much damage to a bear unless you have some decent skills, but it can still perform a huge variety of tasks. The one-piece body is very sturdy with a durable blade and capable of doing anything from chopping to shaving. The non-slip handle can stay in your hands even with the gloves on.

The entire setup is purposefully designed to be light and portable enough for an emergency kit, yet mighty enough to be worth it.

But, bad news – it seems that this item will soon be discontinued. It’s available abroad and in a handful of online stores, but everyone marks that they have limited stock. Either make haste or sit back and wait to see if the manufacturer will release a new version. Considering the Gator’s upgrade, the Bear might receive one soon.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

26. Gerber Pack Hatchet

Blade length: 3.5″
Overall length: 9.5″
Weight: 1lb 9oz
Materials: Stainless steel blade and handle, rubber grip, nylon sheath. We’re still with Gerber and still not talking about babies. Unless you mean this little baby – it might be small but can do so much.

This compact hatchet is capable of performing many tasks, from chopping to precise slicing. The grooves on the handle allow for a firm grip, and therefore for full control over the blade. For a bit extra security, there’s also a lanyard hole so you can keep it hooked to your hand while cutting or chopping.

The blade is coated and corrosion resistant, and overall able to handle quite a bit of abuse. The tall blade grind preserves optimal sharpness And there’s also the full cover sheath that hooks onto your belt.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

27. Hults Bruk The Jonaker

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 9.4″
Weight: 1lb 8oz
Materials: Forged steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather sheath. We return yet again to our Viking friends for a decent compact that can build a ship and destroy the doors of a Saxon monastery. Or, you know, deal with all your chopping and cutting needs while camping.

Hults Bruk has been around since 1697, and they are still hand-forging all their items. So you get all of those centuries of knowledge and practice with this guy. Pretty much, if you are looking for a reliable compact axe or hatchet that can still support a one pound head on its tiny body, this is the company to give your trust.

And if most of the reviewers are to be trusted, this is one of the best models in its genre.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

28. Hults Bruk The Almike

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 16″
Weight: 1.75lb
Materials: Forged steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather sheath. The Almike is very similar to the Jonaker in almost everything but the size. It’s still fairly small and portable, yet a better choice if going micro-mini is not your style.

And this size might be ideal for most campers – small enough not to weigh your backpack down and do precision work, yet large enough to produce the power needed to chop those logs.

And of course, all this with three centuries worth of experience.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

29. Hults Bruk The Akka

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 24″
Weight: 2.2lb
Materials: Forged steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather sheath. If you want to experience the ability of this manufacturer’s craftsmen, this “old woman” is the tool for the job.

It might not be the most compact item on this list, but it’s still very light and easy to take to a campsite. Every single detail is present to give it as much versatility as possible.

The balance of the head and handle produce lots of power, white the notch at the base of the head allows you to grab the axe close to it for precise carving. The head has a tempered zone that is designed to hold a very sharp edge even after many sharpenings.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

30. Hardcore Hammers Survivalist Hatchet

Blade length: 3.6″
Overall length: 18″
Weight: 2lb 8oz
Materials: 4140 tool steel, hickory wood handle, leather sheath. Time for something a bit different again. This hatchet starts as a classic wood handle axe, and then has every single component turned up a notch.

The head is made out of the type of steel that is usually used for the production of guns and cannons. The curved blade can handle both cutting and splitting, while on the other side we find a proper hammer – not just a flat piece of metal that sits there like an afterthought. There is also a little nail/tent stake puller – a thoughtful detail that is a testament of good design.

The manufacturer guarantees that it will help you survive a zombie apocalypse or your money back.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

31. Husqvarna Hatchet

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 13″
Weight: 1lb 8oz
Materials: Forged steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather sheath. Yet once more we must return to Sweden. This time it’s because of Husqvarna, a company that has their fingers in everything from lawn care to clothing and sewing machines.

This hatchet is quite small but is capable of meeting most people’s camping needs. It’s well balanced and the blade stays sharp for a long time. It will not chop down an entire tree, but it will make an easy work of branches and small logs.

The handle is cut on the grain which gives it a bit of flex and helps absorb some of the shocks. It has a light coat of oil instead of a varnish.

Some users report that it may require a little bit of TLC, but that they have been using it for years without major issues.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

32. Husqvarna Composite Multipurpose Axe

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 24″
Weight: 2.2lb
Materials: Steel blade, fibre-reinforced handle.
If you know that the elements might be a problem during your camping trip, going with a traditional axe might not be the best idea.

The composite version from Husqvarna has a fibre-reinforced shaft with a stainless steel component that protects the handle and gives the axe a long lifespan. Even with this non-traditional material, the handle is balanced to allow for maximum power with each swing. There’s also a handy rubberized patch to prevent slipping.

The head has a non-stick coating which reduces friction while cutting. This guy doesn’t come with a classic sheath, but it does include an edge cover.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

33. Husqvarna Traditional Multipurpose Axe

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 26″
Weight: 2.9lb
Materials: Hand-forged steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather edge cover. If you’re going traditional and looking for the best value for money, this might be it.

The hand-forged head retains its edge for a very long time while being able to easily chop through logs. The handle gives enough power with every move and has some flex.

Most of the customers that have voiced their opinions online are happy with their purchase, and some of them have been using them and abusing them for years.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

34. Hoffman Blacksmithing Camp Axe

Blade length: 4″
Overall length: 19″
Weight: 2.25lb
Materials: 4142 chrome/moly alloy steel blade, hickory wood handle, leather edge cover. This one will not be for everyone, but it is a thing of beauty. It may as well put you in the red, but the thing you are paying for is true art and craftsmanship. And how expensive is it? Expensive enough that you need to put down a $100 deposit.

But is it worth it? Well, it is, but only if you think that the best materials available are worth it. Or the perfect balance and shape of the handle, or maybe it is tailor-made to suit your wants and needs. As the company states – because overkill never fails.

35. Klecker KLAX-Lumberjack Axe Head Multi-Tool

Blade length: 3.75″
Overall length: 6.25″
Weight: 14oz
Materials: Stainless steel. This one is unique amongst the multi-tool crowd. The whole tool itself is an axe head that has to be mounted on a handle before use. An adjustable clip allows it to fit onto a variety of handle sizes.

This is perfect not only if you want to pack as light as possible, but if you need more versatility out of your axe -use a larger handle for chopping logs or a smaller one for precision work.

Beside an axe, this multi-tool also replaces a hammer, a scraper, five sizes of hex wrenches, a 1/4″ bit drive socket, a bottle opener, a carabiner, and a ruler.

survival-ax-axe-hatchet-machete-knife-tool-camping

36. Off Grid Tools Survival Axe

Blade length: 4.5″
Overall length: 11.5″
Weight: 1lb 11oz
Materials: Stainless steel. Another multi-tool, but in a slightly more recognizable format. Because of its size and weight, it’s perfect for an emergency kit or a bug out blade. It even features a seatbelt cutter to help you get out of that pickle. Besides that and the hatchet, this tool is also a hammer, hex wrench, a glass breaker, a bottle opener, and a saw.

Have to make a note of some smart design here – the saw is hidden inside the handle and you can get it out by turning a knob. It’s nice when product designers acknowledge that we don’t particularly like our fingers to be chopped off.

37. Schrade Survival Hatchet

Blade length: 3.8″
Overall length: 11.8″
Weight: 22oz
Materials: Stainless steel blade, glass fiber filled PA handle, TPR rubber grip, thermoplastic sheath. It may look very expensive, but this hatchet is one of the more affordable items on this list. Not only is it beautiful to look at, but it also features some moments of smart design that some more expensive models conveniently omit.

The curved handle if perfect for adjusting your grip based on the job you’re doing. The rubber prevents any unwanted slipping and there’s also a lanyard that keeps the hatchet from launching itself into oblivion. Unless you want it to, of course.

Another great thing about the handle is this little tool that it houses. It’s used to remove the head from the rest of the body if you need to do some for any reason.

But, if you hail from California, you might want to check the warning label first. The rest of you, soldier on.

39. Schrade Outdoor Kit

Blade length: 3.5
Overall length: 27″ when set up.
Weight: 2lb
Materials: Stainless steel tool, silicone wrapped handles, polyester case. Yet another multi-tool kit, because none of us are keen to have everything and a kitchen sink in our backpacks when on a long hike.

This one is a set of modular pieces that allow you to create an axe, a pickaxe, a shovel, and a saw. You might notice a theme here, but if you plan to dig fr diamonds, dinosaurs, or Jimmy Hoffa during your outing, this kit might just be for you.

However, please note that this set is about four times the price of other Schrade offerings

40. SOG Badaxe Base Camp Axe

Blade length: 3.4″
Overall length: 16″
Weight: 33oz
Materials: Stainless steel blade, thermal molded rubber handle, Kydex hard case. Going back to something more affordable, the Badaxe is molded as a one-piece for maximum power and durability. While the size and shape make it convenient for carrying around, this axe is capable of handling almost every job at a campsite.

This versatility in part comes from the shape of the handle. The curve allows for a grip change so you can use this tool to either chop logs or do some precise shaving.

The handle also features textured rubber to prevent any slipping and a hole for a lanyard.

41. SOG Badaxe Backcountry Axe And Saw Combo

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 16″
Weight: 29oz
Materials: Stainless steel blade, glass-reinforced nylon handle, nylon sheath. Honestly, if the zombie apocalypse happens, wouldn’t you want to have this in your arsenal?

But, before that happens, this one may be just the ideal tool to bring into the woods with you. Not only is the axe capable of performing all the axing tasks, but it hides a saw in its handle. This means that you can chop up more of the forest than you could with a plain, traditional axe.

And yet, it’s still super-affordable. This set costs almost as half as some other models on this list.

42.TOPS Knives Atax Survival Tool

Blade length: 4.5″
Overall length: 5.5″
Weight: 16oz
Materials: 1095 RC 56-58 steel blade, linen micarta handle, Kydex sheath. Oh boy, I’m a bit excited about this one. At first glance, it’s a compact axe but oh, it’s so much more.

This guy is one of my favorites from this list. It’s so small and simply designed – it can fit into any sized kit, tackle a multitude of tasks and there are no small joints and bits that can easily break, rendering the tool useless.

Since I’m bound to forget everything this the Atax can do, I’m following the designer’s action shots to make this list.

Deep breath, and let’s go. A slingshot, a hammer, a nail remover, an inclinometer, a wire buster, a nut gripper, a skinning tool, a knife, a rangefinder, and of course, an axe. Don’t worry, each one comes with a DVD that is supposed to teach you how to use this bad boy.

The sheath is designed to hand on your belt and can be set for both right-handed and left-handed use.

43. UST ParaHatchet PRO

Blade length: 3.4″
Overall length: 9.7″
Weight: 11oz
Materials: Stainless steel body, cord handle. Hmmm, where did I see this before? Maybe under number 15?

Yes, they are very similar, but with one critical difference. You can’t engage anything on the handle of the Parahatchet. And in this case, the cord serves as a handle lining and texturizer. This means that you can customize this hatchet differently if you wish (silk organza ribbons, anyone?) and repair the damaged handle without any special tools or skills.

44. UST Heritage Camp Axe

Blade length: 3″
Overall length: 10″
Weight: 15oz
Materials: Stainless steel blade and body, wood handle, leather sheath. Sometimes, you can argue with the basics. No bells and whistles here – just a solid camping axe that is capable of handling many different jobs while not burning a hole in your pocket.

It’s small enough for hiking or emergency kits. The one-piece, full tang construction provides durability, white the unvarnished handle prevents slipping. As a final touch, there’s also a leather wrist lanyard to prevent the axe from running away from you.

These were just some of the more beloved items available from established companies an manufacturers, However, there might be a real gem hiding somewhere closer to home.

Whenever possible, check out the local artisans as well. Quite often they will be willing to customize an item and make it better suited for your needs.

In this case, if you want to seek them out, check out your local camping and hunting stores or message boards, or even dress up and go to that renaissance fair. And yes, you’re very much welcome for this excuse to wear tights in public.
